Yankees top prospect sees surreal camp come to abrupt end

March 16, 2019

TAMPA — One of the brightest young players in major league camp this spring had his camp cut short Saturday.

Estevan Florial, the Yankees’ top prospect, suffered a non-displaced fractured in his right wrist after hitting it against the outfield wall.

Florial will undergo further tests, the Yankees announced Saturday after their 17-7 win over the Blue Jays at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

The lefty-hitting Florial, 21, is batting .355 this spring with two doubles, a home run and four RBI. He missed significant time last season after having surgery to remove a broken hamate bone from the same wrist.

Florial’s power and speed has impressed Aaron Boone this spring. The home run he hit earlier this month in Clearwater had both Boone and Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson shaking their heads.

“There is a short people who can hit a ball like that,” Boone recalled telling Jackson in the dugout.

“(Jackson) was quick to tell me he was one of them,” the skipper added with a laugh.
