A woman who accuses Virginia’s lieutenant governor of sexually assaulting her while they were undergraduates at Duke University also said Monday that former Duke basketball player Corey Maggette raped her.

Meredith Watson says Maggette raped her in 1999, during her sophomore year.

Watson’s lawyer, Nancy Erika Smith, said her client told friends and Duke administrators about the rape shortly after it happened, but the school took no action. Maggette attended Duke and played on the basketball team but jumped to the NBA after his freshman season that same year.

After the alleged assault, Watson told an unnamed dean at the university who “discouraged her from pursuing the claim further,” according to Smith.

Several of Watson’s friends confirmed that she disclosed to them that Maggette had raped her years before she came forward with her accusation against Fairfax.

“Meredith told me she had been raped twice at Duke,” R. Stanton Jones, a lawyer who grew up with Watson, told the New York Times. “And she told me that one of the men who raped her was the Duke basketball player Corey Maggette. That was a name I knew because I’m a basketball fan.”

Watson’s spokesperson also showed the Times Facebook messages where Watson and an unnamed friend discuss her alleged rape by Fairfax that occurred in 2000. Watson told the friend she did not report the attack to the school because of how she felt her claim against Maggette was mishandled and ignored.

Fairfax is currently facing calls for his resignation, and he may be impeached by the Virginia state legislature.

After becoming the first ‘one-and-done’ player at Duke, Maggette played in 827 games over 14 seasons in the NBA. He averaged 16 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.

He played for the Los Angeles Clippers for eight seasons, and also suited up for the Orlando Magic, Golden State Warriors, Milwaukee Bucks, Charlotte Bobcats, and Detroit Pistons.

A spokesperson for Fox Sports, where Maggette has worked since retiring from professional basketball in 2013, told the New York Times that the allegation was being investigated and treated seriously. Duke confirmed that it is investigating the claim as well.

Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski claimed to have no knowledge of the accusation and said he learned about it through news reports on Friday.
