A high school sophomore collapsed during gym class Monday and died.
The unidentified student, who attended James Monroe High School in Fredericksburg, Virginia, collapsed while playing baseball and was immediately transported to the local hospital, principal Taneshia H. Rachal said in a message to parents, according to WTVR.
“This loss is sure to raise many emotions, concerns, and questions for our entire school, especially our students,” said Rachal, who promised a crisis intervention team for students, parents and teachers who want support.
Students held a 15-minute moment of silence on Tuesday in honor of their late classmate.
“He always had a kind word, would say ‘good morning’ and was helpful in class and with administration,” Rachal told the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star. “If we needed him, he’d volunteer to step in. If some of his friends were cutting up, he’d say, ‘I got it. I got it.’ No one has ever said anything bad about him. Just a great kid.”
A school nurse and other personnel responded to the student “immediately.”
