A twisted Colombian veterinarian who used his animal training to feed his greed is finally behind bars 14 years after his indictment.

Andres Lopez Elorez had been indicted for his alleged role in a heroin-trafficking scheme in 2005 but fled to Spain, where he dodged authorities for a decade, reported CBS News.

On Wednesday, he finally paid the price for his misdeeds — six years behind bars.

In Colombia, the vet had surgically implanted packs of liquid heroin into the abdomens of puppies before attempting to smuggle them into America.

Elorez was finally busted in 2015 in Santa Comba, Spain, where he had been hiding out for eight years, dodging prosecution and was extradited back to the U.S. in April 2018.

Last September, he pleaded guilty to conspiring to import heroin into the U.S., according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York.

Prosecutors claim Elorez and other Colombian conspirators were smuggling heroin into the U.S. in numerous ways to keep officials at bay.

In a four-month period ending in January 2005, prosecutors asserted Elorez leased a farm in Medellin, Colombia, where he raised dogs and then surgically implanted the bags of liquid heroin into nine pups. He then plotted to import the animals but American officials searching the farm on Jan. 1, 2005, discovered 17 bags of liquid heroin, including 10 that were extricated from the puppies.

Tragically, prosecutors said three dogs died after contracting viruses following surgery.

“Every dog has its day, and with today’s sentence, Elorez has been held responsible for the reprehensible use of his veterinary skills to conceal heroin inside puppies as part of a scheme to import dangerous narcotics into the United States,” said U.S. Attorney Richard Donoghue in a statement.

Elorez is expected to be deported once his prison term is over.
