Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro has fingered the culprit he believes responsible for his nationwide power outage — America!
The leader accused the U.S. of a “demonic” energy plot to cripple his country in an attempt to knock him out of power.
The overwhelming power outage that struck Venezuela severely last week is still affecting some areas. Maduro won’t back down from his belief that America is behind the “cyberattacks against the electrical, telecommunication and Internet systems.”
But electrical engineers think the more likely cause is years of underinvestment in an electrical network seriously neglected and mismanaged.
Venezuela suffered the massive blackout last Thursday that affected 18 of its 23 states. Among the most hurt were hospitals desperately trying to keep equipment operating, reported The Guardian.
Sections of Caracas and other large cities were still lacking power on Wednesday and the capital city’s metro system had been shuttered.
According to opposition leaders, the blackout has left 26 people dead — six of them babies, reported The Guardian.
On Wednesday, China offered a helping hand to the country to restore its power grid.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said his country believed a hacking attack was the power outage cause, reported Reuters.
