Let the mudslinging commence.
President Trump took aim at Michael Avenatti for the first time ever Wednesday, deriding the telegenic attorney as a “low-life” liar in a blistering Twitter tirade disputing the latest allegations against Supreme Court pick Brett Kavanaugh.
“Avenatti is a third rate lawyer who is good at making false accusations, like he did on me and like he is now doing on Judge Brett Kavanaugh,” Trump tweeted, referring to Avenatti’s newest client, Julie Swetnick, who is one of five women accusing Kavanaugh of sexual assault. “He is just looking for attention and doesn’t want people to look at his past record and relationships — a total low-life!”
Avenatti rapidly returned the insult, calling the President a “habitual liar” and a “complete narcissist” who grew up with a “silver spoon in his mouth” and a “gold toilet under his butt.”
“’False accusations?’ Like those crimes your fixer Cohen pled to?” Avenatti tweeted at Trump, referring to his former personal attorney Michael Cohen, who pleaded guilty to fraud and campaign finance crimes last month and is now cooperating with special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.
Referencing Trump’s top attorney in the Mueller probe, Rudy Giuliani, Avenatti continued, “You are so inept that your ‘best and brightest’ are Cohen and Giuliani. Let’s go.”
“He was handed everything,” Avenatti added of Trump. “That is why the majority of America & the UN laughs at him and calls him a con. But at least Putin is a fan.”
Finally, Avenatti shot down Trump’s claim of his supposedly tarnished background.
“Trump doesn’t even know anything about my background,” he tweeted. “Knows nothing about my history of over $1 Billion in verdicts and settlements. I have represented Republicans and Democrats. I have represented hard working people throughout this nation.”
Swetnick says Kavanaugh was present when she was gang-raped at a drunken party while they were both in high school. Her shocking allegations come one day before Kavanaugh is set to testify alongside one of his other accusers, Christine Blasey Ford.
Trump and Avenatti have a well-documented history of animosity, but Wednesday marked the first time the President called him out over Twitter by name.
Avenatti, 47, is best known for representing porn star Stormy Daniels, who says she had sex with Trump in 2006, just a few weeks after First Lady Melania Trump gave birth to his youngest son, Barron.
Acting on Trump’s behalf, Cohen has admitted he gave Daniels $130,000 shortly before the 2016 election in exchange for her promising to keep mum about the alleged tryst — a hush payment that violated campaign finance laws.
