Torching tourists: Do more to stop hawkers’ Battery Park ripoff

November 5, 2018
Begone! (Shawn Inglima / for New York Daily News)

Following our complaints about hawkers in Battery Park illegally selling $35 tickets for harbor boat tours, tricking tourists trying to get to the Statue of Liberty, the Economic Development Corp. sent a tough letter to a vessel operating out of city-owned Pier 36. The message: berthing rights could be canceled if illegal sales continued. Excellent.

Now, amp it up Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen. Send the same ultimatum to boat operators at other city piers. The Department of Consumer Affairs should yank licenses of the hawkers. The Parks Department should install large signs stating that official Liberty tickets cost $18.50.

Tuesday, a new cafe will open at a vacant kiosk at South Ferry. The same kiosk should sell official Liberty Island tickets as cops chase away the pests.
