Three best home brew kits

February 6, 2019
To give yourself the best chance of success, always check your equipment to ensure it’s completely clean. Improper cleaning or sanitization can lead to a bad-tasting brew.

If you like to spend time in the kitchen creating fun new recipes, we have a new hobby for you to try. Brewing your own beer at home can be an interesting way to try some new flavors … and you’ll have the satisfaction of personalizing the beer to your taste. Home brew kits contain the basic ingredients you need to create your own beer at home. Some kits even have all of the hardware you need to brew and bottle the beer.

Considerations when choosing home brew kits

Certain items are required to brew beer. Home brew kits made for beginners contain most, if not all, of these items. You’ll have to provide any of the listed items not found in the kit.

Two buckets (one with an airlock for fermentation and one with a spigot at the bottom)

Stock pot and lid

Long metal spoon for stirring

Thermometer

Siphon

Bottles and caps

Additionally, the kit should include cleaning supplies. Before brewing, you should always use a food-grade sanitizer or dish soap to clean your equipment. A bottle brush that can thoroughly clean the interior of the bottles is important, too.

To brew beer, you need malt extract, hops, and brewer’s yeast. These ingredients should be included in your kit. Some recipes also include priming sugar or other types of flavorings. You’ll then add your own drinking water to the recipe.

You do have the option of purchasing your equipment and ingredients separately. This is a better option for someone who is a bit more advanced in homebrewing; beginners are more likely to find success with a kit that includes everything needed.

Features and price

What exactly will you get for your money when purchasing a home brew kit? For less than $50, you can get a basic home brew kit for beginners. Some of these kits may not include all of the equipment you need, though, such as a stock pot. Refill kits (which have the recipe ingredients only) often fit in this price range, too.

For $50 to $100, you can get a home brew kit made for beginners and slightly more advanced brewers. These kits generally have all of the equipment you need. Spend more than $100, and you will find kits that contain special flavors along with all of the equipment required. Some of these kits are made more for advanced brewers. You can usually manufacture up to five gallons of beer with a home brew kit like this.

FAQ

Q. Do I need to purchase a kit to brew beer at home?

A. No. You could buy all of the ingredients separately on your own. As you become more advanced in your brewing skills, buying your own ingredients allows you to personalize the flavors. For beginners, though, a kit with all the ingredients is a great option.

Q. How much beer does a home brew kit make?

A. The majority of beer-making kits brew either one gallon or five gallons. A one-gallon kit will brew enough beer for ten to eleven 12-ounce bottles. A five-gallon kit can create 53 to 55 bottles of the same size.

Q. Why does my beer kit have sediment at the bottom?

A. This is a normal occurrence when you brew beer. Sediment is just part of the brewing process. Simply discard the sediment when the beer is fermented and bottled.

Home brew kits we recommend

Best of the best: Brewery in a Box Deluxe Home Brewing Equipment Starter Kit

Our take: A great starter kit for the home brewer, as it has everything you need to begin brewing.

What we like: You can make up to five gallons of beer with one kit. Directions are clear and easy to follow.

What we dislike: It’s pricier than others, as it contains all of the necessary hardware, but it’s great for beginners.

Best bang for your buck: Mr. Beer Premium Gold Edition Craft Beer Making Kit

Our take: An excellent value: you can make two batches of beer from a single kit.

What we like: Includes ingredients for two different beer recipes. Lower in price and relatively easy to use, so it’s perfect for beginners.

What we dislike: It’s a basic kit that doesn’t really allow for personalization of the recipes.

Choice 3: Brooklyn Brew Shop Beer Making Kit, Everyday IPA

Our take: A chance for a beginner to craft an IPA brew, which is not common in basic home kits.

What we like: Beyond IPAs, these kits are offered in several other recipes and flavors. Nearly all of the hardware you need to start is included.

What we dislike: Only brews one gallon of beer. Printed instructions are not complete.
