The Texas science teacher who grinned in her mugshot while being booked on suspicion of having sex with a 17-year-old student has accepted a plea deal from prosecutors.
Sarah Fowlkes, 28, submitted a conditional guilty plea Wednesday in Caldwell County District Court and is awaiting a judge’s approval of her no-jail deal, KVUE reported.
Fowlkes was arrested in March 2017 and suspended from her job at Lockhart High School about 35 miles southeast of Austin.
Under the terms of her agreement, Fowlkes would be placed on a type of probation called deferred adjudication for four years, KVUE reported.
She would also surrender her teacher’s license and pay a fine.
“Under the circumstances, it is a situation where the deal isn’t necessarily accepted, so until it is accepted, we don’t know what it will ultimately be,” her attorney, Jason Nassour, told KVUE outside the courthouse.
“If it is accepted, it will be based on the negotiation the state and I had,” he said.
Judge Chris Schneider is reviewing the proposed package and expected to make a decision in the coming weeks.
Nassour reportedly said that if the judge doesn’t accept it, Fowlkes could withdraw her guilty plea and continue to trial.
Fowlkes made national headlines last year for her oddly perky jail pic.
Nassour previously suggested she was smiling because she knew she was innocent.
