A Texas father was left reeling after his 4-year-old daughter died from the flu and pneumonia, saying, “I’m mad at myself. I’m mad at everyone.”
“I’m mad at the hospital. I’m mad at God. I can’t lie to you,” Martel Grinage told ABC 13.
His daughter, Ashanti, went to the emergency room on Jan. 29 after developing a high fever. She was given medicine and sent home. She returned on Jan. 31 when her symptoms continued, the dad said.
It was then that doctors realized she had developed pneumonia. They allegedly told Grinage they did the best they could do to save her.
He said he now wishes he asked doctors to check for pneumonia when she was first brought to the hospital.
Her death comes amid a mild flu season with fewer deaths than previous years. Last year, 180 children died from flu complications, according to the Center for Disease Control. This year, there have been 28.
