Harrowing new video shows the moment a purse snatcher ambushed a mom and her young daughter from behind and violently dragged them down a flight of stairs in northern California.
Suspect Pablo Cabrera Jr., 26, allegedly attacked the victims without warning as they were walking hand in hand on a public staircase last week, the video released Tuesday by the San Jose Police Department shows.
The stunned mom had no time to react before she was yanked backward from the top of the staircase all the way down with her seemingly preschool-aged child jerked around and slammed on the steps.
The little girl was dragged headfirst on her stomach to the bottom of the staircase and then out of view of the surveillance camera.
Robbery detectives later recovered video of the brazen attack along with leads on the suspect’s black Lexus 4-door, which was seen leaving the area, police said.
They quickly identified Cabrera, who was out on parole for burglary, as the suspect.
Cabrera was arrested Saturday at his San Jose residence, where detectives located additional evidence linking him to other robberies, police said.
Detectives believe he targeted multiple Asian female victims to steal expensive handbags in random crimes, cops said.
“We are fortunate this predator was caught before any more members of the public were victimized,” San Jose Police Chief Eddie Garcia said. “I am incredibly proud of the work of our robbery detectives.”
Cabrera was being held without bail in the Santa Clara County Jail on Wednesday and due for an initial court appearance in the afternoon, according to online jail records.
