A 13-year-old boy died Sunday after falling more than 75 feet while hiking in Snow Canyon State Park, Utah.

Elijah Baldwin, from Farragut, Iowa, was on vacation with his mother and siblings when he went free climbing — scaling rock cliffs without gear or protective equipment — in the park, according to a spokesperson for Utah State Parks.

Elijah fell between 75 and 100 feet from a cliff in the Pioneer Names area, officials said.

“He was from out of state with his family, just out visiting the area and he just, you know, wanted to go climb and just an unfortunate accident that happened,” Lt. Regan Wilson told Fox 13. “It’s a tragic accident. Our hearts go out to the family, the people he was with.”

In a statement, Utah State Parks urged everyone to “take necessary precautions” in their parks.
