The mother of an 11-month-old girl whose alleged kidnapping prompted a brief Amber Alert Tuesday is in custody after the tot was found dead inside a plastic bag in a diaper box.
Breanna Lewis, 19, who initially claimed the baby was snatched from her arms by an unknown kidnapper outside her South Carolina home, was charged with filing a false police report, ABC News 4 reports.
Lewis is reportedly the prime suspect in the death of her daughter, little Harlee Lane Lewis, whose body was found in a field 1,000 yards behind a home in Chesterfield County.
The young mom initially claimed she was getting her mail with the baby in her arms when she was struck on the head multiple times and nearly knocked unconscious by a man in a gold SUV, who then grabbed the child and fled, according to Chesterfield County Sheriff Jay Brooks.
But her story unraveled as she was questioned by police, Brooks said, and she admitted to fabricating the tale.
Lewis claimed not to remember what happened to the baby, who has an autopsy scheduled for Wednesday.
Harlee’s disappearance prompted an Amber Alert, though it was canceled after Brooks said police had reason to believe Lewis’s story was bogus.
