A Bronx teen was stabbed and left to die early Tuesday in a dispute on the streets where he was raised, with his killer fleeing the scene, police said.
Damion Gilbert, 18, was pronounced dead at Montefiore Medical Center after the 12:20 a.m. stabbing in the Norwood section, cops said.
“It’s sad, he’s young,” a friend of the dead youth said a few hours later at the murder scene. “We grew up together, he’s from the neighborhood. He was doing good.
“I saw him yesterday before I left the block. The smile on his face, I can’t even think about it.”
The friend left two candles — one red, one blue — to honor the slain teenager.
A security video captured the dying teen, already stabbed in the chest across the street, collapsing on a sidewalk outside 3572 DeKalb Ave.
He then scrambled down the block on his hands and knees before stopping to lie down on his back as a half-dozen locals rush to his aid.
Police later performed CPR in a failed effort to resuscitate the young man.
Building resident Cathy Vidal, 52, said she came outside after hearing the wail of an approaching ambulance.
“I said, ‘What’s going on?'” she recalled. “Then I saw him on the (sidewalk), laying down. There were a lot of people, crying, yelling. And there was a lot of blood.”
The motive was unclear, although police said it involved a dispute of some kind.
“Whatever happened outside, I don’t know,” said Jose Peralta, 61, the building super at 3572 DeKalb Ave. “It’s very sad.”
Peralta said he had earlier cleared out a group of teens partying in the building courtyard as the Memorial Day weekend wound down.
“I kicked them out because they were playing around, drinking,” he said. “I talked to them and told them they had to leave. They apologized and they left.”
Forty-five minutes later, Gilbert was mortally wounded across the street. The video captured him after the bleeding youth crossed DeKalb Ave. and his killer fled the scene.
Gilbert was well-known in the neighborhood, and had friends inside the building at 3572 DeKalb Ave. — opposite the spot where the stabbing took place.
