A bleeding straphanger staggered off the subway near Times Square Friday afternoon claiming he was stabbed by a blue-haired woman, cops said.
The rush hour commute took a decidedly downward turn on a downtown E train just after 5 p.m. when the male passenger got into it with a woman.
“It was one of these ‘Who are you looking at?’ things,” said a police source. “She was sitting there with her head phones on when the dispute started. He started spitting at her and she kicked out at him.”
The bleeding man stumbled from the train at 42nd St. and Eighth Ave., and transit employees called cops, police said.
But contrary to early reports about the case, it appeared late Friday that the woman didn’t stab him.
As the investigation unfolded, it seemed more likely that the cause of the man’s wound was a “sharp object “ in his pocket, a police source said.
“He painted himself as a victim,” said the source. “It was possible she was defending herself.”
Much of the man’s story — including his initial claim that his assailant had blue hair — was contradicted by at least one “very credible witness,” cops said.
