Big Ben is stronger than hate.
The Steelers quarterback wore custom cleats emblazoned with a Star of David, adorned with the phrase “Stronger Than Hate,” in response to the late October shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh’s Squirrel Hill neighborhood.
The Star of David is in yellow and serves as the upper part of the Steelers logo.
Roethlisberger and his wife are friends of Michele Rosenthal, a former team employee. Two of Rosenthal’s brothers were among the 11 killed in the late-October shooting.
Eight men and three women were killed by a gunman inside the Tree of Life Synagogue during services last Saturday, prompting Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto to call it the “darkest day of Pittsburgh’s history.”
The Steelers last week won their first game following the shooting.
Roethlisberger said afterward that he hoped the victory gave Pittsburgh residents “maybe three hours of a break of maybe not thinking about it all the time.”
