State Sen. Jose Peralta, who died unexpectedly Wednesday at the age of 47, will be laid to rest this week.
His wake will be held Monday at the Joseph Farenga & Sons Funeral Home in Astoria from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. His funeral will be Tuesday at the St. Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Church in Jackson Heights at 10:30 a.m.
Peralta, the first Dominican-American elected to the State Senate, may have died from an infection, and had an ear irritation prior to his passing, his wife told the Daily News Thursday.
The state senator died at 9:23 p.m. at Elmhurst Hospital, a spokesman from his office said. The city medical examiner is conducting an autopsy to determine his exact cause of death.
Gov. Cuomo donated $10,000 to Peralta Memorial Fund GoFundMe campaign.
"Senator Peralta dedicated his life to serving New Yorkers, and the family of New York will come together to ensure he receives a fitting memorial,” Cuomo said in a statement. “As we continue to mourn his sudden passing, Senator Peralta's family and loved ones remain in our thoughts and prayers.”
New Yorkers shared memories of Peralta on the funeral home’s website.
“It was an honor meeting Senator Jose E. Peralta several years ago while being part of the New York State Assembly Internship,” wrote Lucia Tiburcio-Sanchez. “Thanking him and his family for all those years of service to our Queens community.”
“Thank you Senator Peralta for your commitment and dedication to the LGBT Community,” wrote Michelle Lopez. “It was such an honor working with your staff . . . Will always remember you.”
