Shareef O’Neal, a 6-10, 220-pound freshman power forward at UCLA, will miss the 2018-19 season after finding out he will need heart surgery.

The son of NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal, Shareef was the 40th-ranked player in the 2018 class coming out of high school, according to Rivals.

Responding to a tweet from TMZ that said UCLA doctors saved his life, Shareef posted a heartfelt message to Twitter.

“Thank God the UCLA medical staff caught it early,” Shareef told TMZ.

Vowing to be “back in no time,” Shareef will redshirt this season and be eligible to play for UCLA in 2019.
