Scary Kevin Durant sight overshadows Suns shocking upset

March 11, 2019

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Warriors’ three selfless stars usually can make any shot from any distance. In their latest game, though, Kevin Durant suffered a right ankle contusion while Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson often hit nothing but clanks.

The Warriors then fell short in a 115-111 loss to the Phoenix Suns on Sunday at Oracle Arena. The Warriors (45-21) failed to capitalize on the effort and execution in Friday’s win over No. 2 seeded Denver and lost against a Suns team (16-52) that has the Western Conference’s worst record. The Warriors entered Sunday’s game against Phoenix with an 18-game winning streak, longest in the NBA.

The Warriors faced numerous obstacles, including an inconsistent effort, a 16-point blown lead, a mysteriously poor shooting nights for Curry and Thompson as well as Durant’s injury.

Durant, who had 25 points on 9-of-17 shooting, went to the locker room midway through the fourth quarter after taking an awkward fall in his right ankle. Though Durant stood up and walked on his own to the locker room, the Warriors sat him the rest of the game. Durant also had taken a fall on his right ankle in last week’s win over Philadelphia, though that did not preclude Durant from playing in that game and afterwards.

As for Thompson and Curry? Thompson had 28 points while going 10-of-22 from the field and 4-of-15 from 3. Curry added 18 points on only a 6-of-20 clip and going 4-of-15 from deep.
