Readers sound off on Election Day

November 6, 2018

Today is Election Day, go vote

Miami: “The government you elect is the government you deserve,” said Thomas Jefferson. He also declared, “Honesty is the first chapter of the book wisdom.” James Madison proclaimed, “The accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive and judiciary, in the same hands, whether of one, a few, or many, and whether hereditary, self-appointed or elective, may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny.” Back to Jefferson: “We in America do not have government by the majority. We have government by the majority who participate.”

’Nuff said. If you want help our nation once again fulfill the brilliant vision of our Founding Fathers, you must vote. Cast your ballot for integrity, civility, and checks and balances. Don’t let Churchill’s quote become true about the U.S.: “The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter.”

And just one more. This from George Washington “However [political parties] may now and then answer popular ends, they are likely in the course of time and things, to become potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion.” Joe Weber

Punish the Republicans

Cold Spring, N.Y.: As a lifelong independent, my choices on Election Day are the easiest to make in the 41 years that I have been an active voter. The stench of bigotry permeating from the Republican Party and the inability of the spineless GOP leaders to clean it up speaks volumes to which party deserves my support. The fear-mongering lies that are being sprayed around like an active shooter’s bullets will hopefully send a great many independents and possibly even some GOP supporters running to vote the Democratic line. Let’s not allow history to remember us as a bunch of Trump Chumps. The videos of Trump’s rallies with all his lackeys standing behind him cheering like mindless hyenas will be there for posterity’s sake. History will posit that the people who supported such an unqualified businessman with six bankruptcies, the civility of a horny hog and an inner circle with numerous convictions must have been either bigots themselves or truly uneducated. Gene Kelly

A new senator for Jersey

Brooklyn: If you or I were ever charged with the crimes Bob Menendez committed, we would both be in jail. Instead, his boys’ club Senate gave him a free pass with an “admonishment.” If New Jerseyans re-elect this crook over a family man, former Marine and successful businessman like Bob Hugin, New Jersey will become the laughingstock of all 50 states, worse than Rhode Island and worse than those states where they voted for the dead guy. David DiBello

Marc’s the man

Huntington Station, L.I.: Marc Molinaro can count three more votes from the Kennedy house! Gov. Cuomo, you have turned into a thug and a boor! I think your father would be terribly disappointed in your manners. When he spoke at the Democratic National Convention all those years ago, I can still remember my father talking about what a wonderful speaker he was, what a gentleman he was. He admired your father so much. I am assuming that your advisers have told you to go after Molinaro and tie him to the President. I get that, but your rude behavior in the debate was more in line with the President’s! You interrupted your opponent and kept dogging him with questions, not letting him speak. I’m sorry, but I think it’s time for some new blood in Albany. Nancy Macri Kennedy

Turning off Andy

Bayside: Gov. Cuomo’s commercials make me sick to my stomach. Isn’t it obvious the man is talking like a Communist? Free college at taxpayer expense? Child sacrifice called reproductive health care? Gay marriage called equality? The Founding Fathers would be rolling in their graves if they saw those commercials. Although I am a big fan of the New York Constitution Party, I’m supporting Republican Marc Molinaro because the bloodthirsty pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage, pro-socialism Democratic governor must be stopped cold. I suggest everyone do the same. The smartest move I ever made was joining the great, patriotic John Birch Society. Praise God. Michael Mullaney

Blast from the past

Great Neck, L.I.: In the one and only debate, Gov. Cuomo proudly proclaimed his support for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transsexual rights. His Republican opponent Marc Molinaro took the high road, never mentioning Andrew’s role as campaign manager for his late father Mario Cuomo’s 1977 mayoral run against Ed Koch with “Vote for Cuomo, not the homo” posters all over town. Cuomo reminds me of the infamous characters, who “see no evil, say no evil, hear no evil” when it comes to his personal past and current administration’s corruption and inappropriate behavior. Larry Penner

No thanks, Cuomo

Brooklyn: Lizard-face Cuomo says he’s a Democrat, yet he received millions from Republicans and millions more from Wall Street and big real estate companies for reelection. Anyone believe he’ll use this money to help the little guy? Cuomo talks about college grads, but the state here has one of the slowest job growth rates in the country (grads without jobs). Cuomo gave huge tax cuts to big corporations while cutting back public services, programs and mental health care. Cuomo is not what he says he is, and that’s not someone to vote for. Robert Romeo

Black votes matter

Jamaica: On Saturday’s “AM Joy” show on MSNBC, a Caucasian women in Peachtree Corners, Ga., at a Brian Kemp rally was asked about voter suppression. In part of her answer, she stated that African-American voters are unable to follow instructions. On that note, African-American voters should definitely go out and vote and prove to all we read and follow instructions very well. Charlene Black

Wofford did no wrong

Brooklyn: The fact that Keith Wofford represented Puerto Rico bondholders is not newsworthy. Puerto Rico sold these bonds and was expected to repay the money to bondholders. Is it a crime to represent a hedge fund that held Puerto Rican bonds with the expectation that Puerto Rico would actually adhere to the bond agreements? William Thurlow

Bring back our country

Manhattan: Remember when America used its massive military power to maintain peace around the world? Remember when a President said in wartime, “We have nothing to fear but fear itself”? Remember when sending the U.S. Army to “protect” the nation against a few thousand ragtag refugees would have seemed like some kind of joke? Our current President doesn’t remember any of that, if he ever knew anything at all about this country. He’s a cowardly bully who fires up his followers with terror and threats, as if America were a fearful puppy that cringes from a dragonfly. Make America America again — vote for Democrats.
