New York’s Bravest and New York’s Boldest are growing braver and bolder with the promotion of some of their best and brightest. And the professionals on the rise in both heavily male departments happen to be women.
At the Fire Department today, Laura Kavanagh becomes first deputy commissioner, having spent the last four years revolutionizing FDNY recruitment to diversify the force, overseeing fire and EMS dispatch communications, aiding sick first responders and their families, and that leaves out plenty.
At the same ceremony, Elizabeth Cascio will get a promotion to FDNY chief of staff, after leading key projects for the department since 2014. And to think this former EMT thought back then that she could sneak off and retire .
Over at the Department of Correction, Commissioner Cynthia Brann promoted Hazel Jennings this week to the top uniformed position atop an 11,000-strong force keeping city jails on Rikers Island and elsewhere secure.
What all plainly have in common is vast talent and commitment to a city lucky to have them.
