Paul Ryan appears to revel in 'preventing' Trump in SOTU intro

Paul Ryan, covert Speaker of the resistance?

The House Speaker appeared to make a telling Freudian slip while introducing President Trump ahead of his State of the Union address Tuesday night, telling members of Congress that he has the distinct honor of "preventing" the commander-in-chief.

"I have the high privilege and the distinct honor of preventing, uh, presenting to you the President of the United States," the Wisconsin congressman said to cheers from his fellow Republicans and boos from the assembled Democrats.

Ryan's relationship with the President has at times been strained. Trump lashed out against him and other congressional Republicans after they twice failed to repeal Obamacare.

Ryan's apparent slip of the tongue Tuesday night set off waves of sarcasm over Twitter.

"I like Paul Ryan's original version: 'the distinct honor of preventing,'" Ben Winkler tweeted.
