Oddsmakers are laying bets on the President’s State of the Union address

The stakes are high on tonight’s State of the Union address – literally.

Oddsmakers are making President Trump’s Tuesday night speech a bit more interesting by taking bets on what will and won’t be said.

“We’ll take any bet,” says MyBookie.com book maker David Strauss, who thinks the speech will last about an hour and four minutes. He invites anyone who thinks it’ll be either longer or shorter to put their money where their mouth is.

Another bet seeing early action is a wager on whether or not Chuck Schumer or Nancy Pelosi will stand to applaud the President at any point tonight.

“All the money is on ‘no,’ ” he said.

The odds are 2-1 against either Democratic leader giving the Commander-in-Chief a standing O. In other words, anyone who thinks Schumer or Pelosi will ignore their tense border wall dispute with the President and cheer him on anyway will double their money.

Strauss plans to listen to the SOTU before posting odds on when — or if — Trump will eventually declare a state of emergency to finance a wall on the U.S. border with Mexico. But Strauss is all ears if gamblers want to bet that Trump will declare a state of emergency during the address itself.

“It’d be a very Trump move,” he said. “I don’t think anyone would be surprised if he did it.”

When the President addressed the nation earlier this month, MyBookie.com took bets on how many times Trump would say something that wasn’t true. This time around, Strauss isn’t placing odds on that bet.

“We’ll probably stay away from fact-checking during the speech,” he said.

Strauss is also asking gamblers how many times the President will say the word “Democrats” in his speech. As of Tuesday afternoon, betters were split as to whether or not Trump will call out his rivals on the other side of the aisle more or fewer than three times. Strauss says he doesn’t think we’ll hear the words “fake news” Tuesday.

“We’re going to hear some new material here,” he laughed.

Strauss currently doesn’t expect Trump to mention Russia, but he’s willing to bet on that, too.

My Bookie is looking to recover from a rough Super Bowl Sunday, which according to Strauss, cost his Antigua based company “seven-digit losses.” Prospective SOTU gamblers might be happy to hear that Strauss may be having a run of bad luck.

“At least someone will,” he confessed.

Bookies at the online site Bovada are also laying down bets on Tuesday night’s nation address. They’re guessing the address goes around one hour and seven and a half minutes and that the President wears a red tie while giving the speech.

Bovada oddsmakers are also taking odds on whether Trump will mention freshman congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez during his speech and the smart money says he will — but there’s a catch. In order for that bet to pay off, AOC has to rise to her feet at least once during the President’s address.
