Police on Tuesday said they have identified the man who fatally shot a food deliveryman when the essential worker wouldn’t fork over his electric bike during an armed hold up at an East Harlem playground.
Suspect Douglas Young stormed up to Francisco Villalva Vitinio, 29, as he was taking a break on a park bench in Poor Richard’s Playground near E.108th St. and Third Ave. on March 29, officials said.
Young tried to take Villalva Vitinio’s electric bike, but when the deliveryman wouldn’t give up his ride, Young shot him.
“It was his livelihood,” Villalva Vitinio’s close friend Mario Estrada, 37, said about the electric bike during an interview with the Daily News following the shooting. “It was expensive and he lost his life over it.”
Young ran off with the bike, which was recovered about a block away.
“The chain was broken so he couldn’t even continue stealing it,” Estrada said.
No arrests have been made.
Anyone with information regarding Young’s whereabouts is urged to call NYPD Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS.
