Northwestern kid to crying piccolo girl: The memes of NCAA Tournaments past

March 22, 2019

Another March, another NCAA Tournament — and another season for the accompanying memes.

While we fill out brackets and wait for the gems this year’s tournament is sure to provide, let’s take a look back at some of the more popular memes from the last few years.

Michigan State’s ‘Waffle Guy’ (2019)

The meme-ing of 2019 got off to a fast start with Michigan State’s “Waffle Guy.” According to the Lansing State Journal, Nate Guzowski and his waffle (hat? scarf? mask? costume?) went viral after the Spartans won the Big Ten Tournament last week.

Loyola’s Sister Jean (2018)

Loyola chaplain Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt became a sensation during the Ramblers’ Cinderella run to the Final Four last year.

Alas, even Sister Jean wasn’t immune to the “Crying Jordan” treatment when Loyola’s run finally ended with a 69-57 loss to Michigan.

#NorthwesternKid (2017)

During Northwestern’s 79-73 loss to Gonzaga in 2017, John Phillips won instant fame as the perfect symbol of March Madness.

While #NorthwesternKid started as a symbol of close losses, busted brackets and all the other forms of anguish the tournament delivers, the screenshot of Phillips in pure agony went on to accompany tweets expressing distress in any situation.

(In case you were wondering what Phillips is up to these days, he’s doing just fine — and he got the braces removed.)

Duke’s Luke Kennard (2017)

The year that brought us #NorthwesternKid also brought us Luke Kennard.

After Duke lost to South Carolina in the second round, a photo of the sophomore guard went viral — and was quickly used to express all-caps displeasure at a number of things.

Villanova’s ‘crying piccolo girl’ (2015)

After a camera caught Villanova piccolo player Roxanne Chalifoux playing through tears after the team’s loss to North Carolina State in 2015, the video immediately went viral.

Two years later, the meme came back around when Wisconsin ruthlessly uploaded the video to Twitter — solely captioned “SWEET.” — after knocking out Villanova in the second round.

Sad Wisconsin Teletubby (2015)

The viral costume-clad fan didn’t have the same happy ending as 2019’s “Waffle Guy.”

After Wisconsin’s loss to Duke, cameras caught Wisconsin sophomore Tyler Hartmann donning the costume of Po from “Teletubbies.”
