Popeye has always credited spinach for his muscles, and now the leafy green is the star of a kooky new vegan ice cream flavor in his honor.
Called Popeye’s Fleet Treat, it boasts a vegan ice cream base made with raw cashew milk, coconut cream, raw organic coconut oil, pure cocoa butter, and organic cane sugar. The base is then blended with organic spinach, extra virgin olive oil, turmeric and sea salt. “The result is a sweet and savory summertime treat that packs a flavorful punch," Van Leeuwen states in a release.
The temporary treat is here for just two weeks, launching Monday and available through June 2 at select Van Leeuwen shops including those in the South Street Seaport (224 Front St.), Soho (61 West Houston St.) and Hudson Yards (20 Hudson Yards, Level 3) while supplies last.
A single scoop of the bright green flavor goes for $5.75, a double scoop costs $7.75 and a triple scoop will set you back $9.75. The ice cream brand teamed up with Kings Features Syndicate, a comic distribution company, for the fun flavor.
Popeye the Sailor was first seen in the King Features comic strip “Thimble Theatre” on Jan. 17, 1929. The character was later adapted into cartoon shorts, TV shows and video games, and of course, Robin Williams starred as the one-eyed sailor in the 1980 film, "Popeye.”
The frozen sweet is just one way King Features Syndicate is celebrating Popeye’s 90th birthday. There’s also “Popeye’s Island Adventures,” a new animated short series for kids airing on the Popeye and Friends Official YouTube channel.
