The mom of an infant who nearly died when a baby wipe was stuffed down his throat — allegedly by his nanny — detailed on the witness stand Wednesday the hysterical and cryptic call she got from the caretaker that day.
“She was really frantic and in her tone of voice she kept telling me, ‘Call 911! Call 911!’ ” Meredith Sondler-Bazar testified n Manhattan Supreme Court at the trial of her former babysitter, Marianne Benjamin-Williams.
“I didn’t know what had happened. I didn’t know which child,” said the mom of then 2-month-old Maxwell and his 14-month-old sister Ariella about the chilling call she got at work on May 18, 2017.
Sondler-Bazar bolted from her Oppenheimer & Co. office on Broad St. and called for help as she rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where her choking son had been taken.
“My babysitter just called me… I don’t know what happened…I’m not home,” she is heard saying in a recording of the call, played ifor jurors on direct-examination by prosecutor Nicole Blumberg. “I have two small kids…I don’t know what’s going on.”
She fought to remain calm as she directed them to her family’s Waterside Plaza apartment near the East River, where she knew Benjamin-Williams should be with her kids.
Sondler-Bazar told jurors she’d never listened to the tape prior to to the trial because it was “too emotional to listen.”
At the hospital, as doctors worked to save her baby, Sondler-Bazar testified that she felt “awful.”
“You can’t do anything to help … It’s the worst feeling as a mother,” she said.
Benjamin-Williams appeared stunned when physicians broke the news that it was a wipe lodged in Maxwell’s windpipe, the mother said.
The sitter, the witness said, was also concerned about herself as they waited to hear the baby’s prognosis.
“She kept saying she wasn’t coming back until we had cameras everywhere in our apartment including the bathroom so she could watch the kids at all times,” Sondler-Bazar said.
“I could go to jail if he had died on my watch,” the mom recalled the sitter saying.
Blumberg suggested the nanny had a beef with her bosses over her salary and was fed up with Maxwell’s fussiness.
