A Michigan mom has been charged with child abuse after her infant daughter overdosed on methadone because the woman thought the girl was going through withdrawal from breastfeeding.

Not only is Jennifer Pickerd facing a lengthy prison term but could potentially lose her parental rights, reported TV station WZZM.

On Sept. 30, Pickerd, 37, of Grand Rapids, Mich., admitted giving her 6-week-old daughter, who hasn’t been identified, the drug because the girl was “fussy,” indicate court records. Cops had responded to a 911 call regarding an infant with difficulty breathing.

The opioid methadone is frequently used to treat addictions to painkillers or heroin. It is unclear why Pickerd was using the medication.

“(Pickerd) denied calling (her daughter’s) doctor before deciding to give he baby the controlled substance,” read the court documents.

When the little girl became unresponsive, the mom administered Narcan — which blocks the effects of opiods — to make her conscious.

“The baby was released from the hospital on Oct. 5 after going through detox for methadone,” said Grand Rapids Police Sgt. Catherine Williams.

Pickerd is being held in county jail on a $25,000 bond and a parental-termination hearing is set for later this month. If convicted of second-degree child abuse, she could spend the next 10 years in the slammer.

Pickerd was on probation during her arrest for stealing a cell phone at a restaurant and skipping out on the bill.
