Mississippi cops fired, face possible charges in attack on detained man

May 25, 2018

“I’ve never been so afraid in my life,” James Barnett wrote alongside a photo of his face, bloodied by the two cops who arrested him.

Two Mississippi police officers were fired after a man said they repeatedly kicked him in the face while arresting him.

According to a report, Laurel police Capt. Tommy Cox says it became obvious to supervisors that there was a problem with the way 36-year-old James Barnett was detained — and the two officers were subsequently fired.

The department says it has been in contact with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation to inquire about possible criminal charges against the officers.

Barnett posted pictures of his alleged abuse on his Facebook page last week.

“I’ve never been so afraid in my life,” Barnett wrote in the post. “I will not let this go, I don’t want this to happen to anyone else. There is no justice in what they did to me!! But I will get JUSTICE!!”

Laurel police said there are no updates to the case as of Friday morning.
