A freshman at the University of St. Thomas fell to her death from the 10th floor of a Minneapolis apartment building.
California native Joia Simpson, 19, was attending a Halloween party near the University of Minnesota when the fatal fall happened.
Simpson died at the scene.
The circumstances prior to Simpson’s death are being investigated, Fire Department Assistant Chief Bryan Tyner told the Star Tribune.
However, emergency dispatch audio recordings said Simpson fell over two side-by-side railings.
Simpson was interested in studying business and her family “wants people to remember her beautiful smile,” according to a statement from St. Thomas.
“I am grateful we have such a supportive community here,” said Rev. Larry Blake, chaplain of St. Thomas’ Campus Ministry. “Students caring about one another, faculty and staff who care for the students, but also one another as colleagues.”
Rev. Blake called Simpson’s death “very, very tragic.”
