A pair of Ryanair passengers took getting their Irish on a little too literally pre-Saint Patrick’s Day when they came to blows over a woman’s shoeless trip to the bathroom.
On a flight from Scotland to Spain, the fisticuffs erupted. A 20-something flight attendant dove into the fray, trying to break up the fight, while passengers screamed at the brawlers to stop.
When the flight originating in Glasgow landed in Tenerife, police escorted the opponents off the plane, leaving blood spattered on the overhead luggage rack doors, according to one post on Twitter.
An argument over footwear sparked the altercation, though the tale did not have a Cinderella-style happy ending.
“It all started over a woman not wearing her shoes on the flight going to the toilet, and a very drunk man pulled her up about it, saying that someone would stand on her toes, then the woman’s boyfriend stepped in and tried to defuse the situation,” said Ben Wardrop, who filmed the donnybrook, to Sky News. “Once the plane landed and more alcohol was consumed the man and the woman’s boyfriend started arguing, both being very drunk they started to fight, and the man in the video with lots of blood was trying to get the man to calm down and he got hit on the nose.”
After the young flight attendant and other crew succeeded in separating the two hellions, they were each led off in opposite directions, reported USA Today. Upon landing, authorities hauled them both away.
Ryanair confirmed that “two passengers became disruptive in-flight” and said the crew had brought police aboard upon arrival.
“The aircraft landed normally and police removed and detained two individuals,” Ryanair spokesman Piaras Kelly said in a statement to USA Today. “We will not tolerate unruly or disruptive behavior at any time and the safety and comfort of our customers, crew and aircraft is our number one priority. This is now a matter for local police.”
