Vice President Mike Pence has supported numerous anti-LGBTQ policies throughout his career — but apparently he knows how to entertain a couple of same-sex-loving men.
The prime minister of Ireland Leo Varadkar stopped by Washington to discuss the relationship between his country and the United States. Varadkar, the openly gay and biracial son of an Indian immigrant, brought with him a very special guest: his cardiologist boyfriend Matt Barrett.
Pence, a prominent conservative voice who’s constantly criticized for his anti-marriage-equality views, hosted the couple for breakfast at the Naval Observatory.
Ever the gracious guest, Varadkar tweeted: “Vice President Mike Pence invited me and Matt to his home at the Naval Observatory this morning. It’s great to be back here for a really warm reception.”
When addressing the big pink elephant in the room, Varadkar said, “I lived in a country where if I’d tried to be myself at the time, it would have ended up breaking laws,” The Washington Post. reported. “But today, that is all changed. I stand here, leader of my country, flawed and human, but judged by my political actions, and not by my sexual orientation, my skin tone, gender or religious beliefs.”
He added that Ireland is a land where he is “judged by my political actions and not my sexual orientation, my skin tone, gender or religious beliefs … We are all God’s children.”
Sadly, Pence’s wife Karen, who has recently been under fire for getting a part-time job at a Northern Virginia Christian school that bans staff from engaging in “homosexual or lesbian sexual activity … transgender identity, any other violation of the unique roles of male and female,” couldn’t make it.
