Mets GM weighs outfield options and Yoenis Cespedes’ future

December 13, 2018

Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen confirmed reports that he met with outfielder Adam Jones.

The Mets are looking for a right-handed hitting center fielder, but it’s a much lower priority than upgrading behind the plate because they already have Juan Lagares.

“We have a really good defender out in centerfield. I am open to all suggestions for the big bopper who will be out there. Absolutely. But at this point, we have Lagares,” Van Wagenen said Wednesday. “He played another game in winter ball last night. He played eight innings. He doubled and is showing all the signs of what we hoped for him to be at his best coming into next season. Unless we make any roster moves, yeah, Juan Lagares is our center fielder.”

The Mets also could potentially have a crowded outfield if and when Yoenis Cespedes returns from surgery on both his heels. That factors into the possible deals.

“We’re not only hoping he will be a big impact this year, but he is going to be a big part of our team in 2020 as well,” Van Wagenen said. “He’s on our roster, he’s an impact guy, we hope we can get him back. We’re being honest and transparent and direct with the other people involved so they know what the opportunity is and how we are all going to make it fit.”
