Mets’ Drew Smith’s surgery is successful, now what about his ankle?

March 16, 2019

PORT ST. LUCIE — Drew Smith underwent successful Tommy John surgery on Tuesday and Callaway finally had a chance to speak with the reliever on Friday.

Callaway said it’s common in this type of surgery for ligaments to be drawn from other part of the body in order to mend the injured elbow. Smith’s ligaments were taken out of his ankle, so now the 25-year-old is having a hard time walking in addition to using his right arm.

“But he was like, ‘Hey, at least this is taking the pain away from my arm,’” Callaway said.

The manager added that Smith is excited for his potential after recovering from the surgery.

“He understands it can be a long grinding process to come back the right way,” Callaway said. “He’s going to be able to handle that fine. He’s definitely excited about what could be after this process is done. So are we.”
