Mets beat Pirates in walk-off fashion on same day of Sandy Alderson’s cancer reveal

June 27, 2018

The Mets sent Sandy Alderson out with a win.

Hours after the general manager announced he was taking a leave of absence due to a recurrence of his cancer, the Mets ended a seven-game losing streak with a 4-3 walk-off victory over the Pirates in 10 innings at Citi Field Tuesday night.

With runners on first and second and one out, Wilmer Flores delivered the winning single down the third-base line to end the game and give the Mets their first win since June 18. It was Flores’ third walk-off hit this season, and his nine career walk-off RBI tied David Wright for the franchise record.

Steven Matz started for the Mets and carried a no-hitter into the fifth. But then things unraveled. The lefthander allowed four straight hits to begin the inning. The Pirates brought two runs home and tied the game. Matz then gave up a solo home run to Gregory Polanco in the seventh, as the Pirates jumped ahead. The lefty struck out seven while walking none and surrendered six hits.

Michael Conforto tied the game in the bottom half, though, depositing a long fly ball into the bullpen in right-center field for his 10th home run of the season.

After Asdrubal Cabrera popped out on a bunt, attempting to move the runner to third, Flores rocketed an 0-1 fastball down the line. It ricocheted off the third-base umpire and hit the tarp. Conforto, who walked to lead off the inning, came around to score easily.

After Conforto’s game-tying blast in the seventh, Jeurys Familia replaced Anthony Swarzak in the next inning with one out and runners on first and second. The righthander induced a fielder’s-choice ground ball from David Freese before walking Diaz to load the bases. Familia responded by forcing Jose Osuna into an inning-ending groundout to second.

Flores, who also hit a two-run double in the first inning to open the scoring and now has 12 RBI since coming off the DL June 15.

Conforto hit his 10th home run on May 19 last season — a sign of just how much he’s struggled this year.
