Another A-list actor liked his chances to land the lead role in “Titanic” before it went to Leonardo DiCaprio.
Matthew McConaughey revealed he thought he’d get the role of Jack Dawson in the now-classic 1997 romance drama when he tried out for the gig early on his career.
“I went and auditioned for that. I wanted that,” McConaughey says on The Hollywood Reporter’s “Awards Chatter” podcast. “I auditioned with Kate Winslet. Had a good audition. Walked away from there pretty confident that I had it. I didn’t get it. I never got offered that.”
Winslet — who starred as Rose Dewitt Bukater in the movie — previously shared on Stephen Colbert’s “The Late Show” last year that she had auditioned alongside McConaughey in the movie.
While she said the audition with McConaughey was “completely fantastic,” she says it would’ve been a “totally different film” had he been cast instead of DiCaprio.
McConaughey has certainly managed to land a number of other plum roles in the years since, including the 2013 drama “Dallas Buyers Club,” which netted him the Oscar for Best Actor.
Th actor said on the THR podcast that in most cases he’s been happy with the movie roles he’s turned down over the years, but admits “L.A. Confidential” is one potential exception.
