A man in Massachusetts hoarding dozens of unlicensed firearms along with thousands of rounds of ammunition has been arrested.
Shirley police officers on Tuesday seized approximately 47 illegal firearms, 44 homemade silencers and an estimated 35,000 rounds of ammunition from Jeffrey Dusti’s home, according to a department press release.
Authorities had been executing a search warrant after receiving a tip that the 62-year-old was in possession of a homemade silencer when they uncovered the massive weapons cache. Upon arriving on on the scene they spotted a sawed off shotgun in plain view.
Dusti at the time also had an open warrant out of Ayer District Court on two charges of sexual assault and battery on person over the age of 60, two counts making annoying phone calls and witness intimidation in connection with an unrelated case.
He was arraigned Thursday in Shirley District Court and was ordered held without bail pending a hearing next week.
“The defendant is alleged to not only have been in possession of multiple illegal firearms, but to also have been illegally modifying the guns making them all the more dangerous,” said District Attorney Ryan.
“Simply put, there is no reason that a person with good intentions would require a silencer. Those devices are strictly made for violent and insidious purposes. I am grateful to the work of the State Police Gang Unit whose investigation led to the defendant’s arrest without incident. Thankfully these dangerous weapons will not be making their way onto our streets and into our communities.”
Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan told CBS News that of the dozens of high-capacity weapons seized at the home, 11 were licensed to a woman who has not been charged in the case. Authorities did however, revoke her license to carry.
