The White Sox are assembling an All-Star roster…of Manny Machado recruiters.
After signing Machado’s brother-in-law, Yonder Alonso, in December, the ChiSox agreed to a deal with his close friend, Jon Jay, Monday night, according to multiple reports. The deal is pending a physical.
Jay, Machado and Alonso are all from Miami (sorry, Marlins fans), and they grew up together, chronicling their friendship in a Players’ Tribune article in 2017.
“The three of us all come from the similar backgrounds,” Jay wrote in that story. “I’ve known Yonder since he was 10. And we’ve both known Manny since he was a young kid coming up. We’re from the same neighborhoods, the same culture, so it’s just natural for us to stick together.”
Those last two words — “stick together” — will likely scare Yankees fans who are hoping Machado ultimately chooses the Bronx.
The White Sox are keeping no secrets about trying to woo Machado. They’re also the only one of the three contenders (Philadelphia being the other) to make an official offer. And with Alonso and now Jay both having Machado’s ear, the south side team may have the upper hand.
“We all play on different teams now, but everyone knows we have a special bond,” Alonso wrote in that same Players’ Tribune story.
The Yankees, however, have their own ace up their sleeve. According to Daily News columnist Wally Matthews, a source said Machado’s wife, Yainee (Alonso’s sister), wants to live in New York and loves the big city. She also has significant influence over her husband’s decisions, according to the source.
Though the free agent market for Machado and Bryce Harper continues to move at a sluggish pace, small moves like these are keeping everyone on their toes. Last week, Machado followed the YES network on Instagram, sending Yankees fans spiraling.
