There’s a mystery team in play for Manny Machado…at least that’s what his agent wants everyone to believe.
In addition to the Phillies and White Sox, Fancred’s Jon Heyman reported Friday that another team is believed to be chasing Machado, according to the star shortstop’s camp. The Yankees were left off that list and certainly are no mystery team, considering they have been very public suitors for Machado’s services, despite not yet making a concrete offer. But it’s looking increasingly unlikely they’ll be the team to land him.
The leak about another team could be a negotiating tactic by Machado’s agent Dan Lozano, who is probably looking to drive up the price for his top free agent. Before the hot stove season, Machado had been expecting a deal in the range of $300 million, but it’s very likely he won’t be getting that, even from the White Sox, who at this point appear to be the most aggressive players.
Never count the Yankees and Brian Cashman out, but the move for DJ LeMahieu on Friday was yet another sign that they are ready to throw the towel in on Machado. It’s interesting to think of a scenario where another team, aside from the three that have been talked about ad nauseum for the past two months, swoops in at the eleventh hour to snag Machado.
Keep dreaming, Mets fans.
