An Illinois man who’s accused of beating his mother to death with a baseball bat claims he was acting in self-defense after mistaking her for an intruder.
Thomas Summerwill, 21, was charged with second-degree murder this week after prosecutors determined his defense claim “was not reasonable” because he was intoxicated during the March 24 incident.
Summerwill killed his mother, Mary, in their home in the Chicago suburb of Campton Hills, according to a news release by Kane County State’s Attorney.
The man told authorities he awoke to what he believed was a burglar in his bedroom, so he grabbed a baseball bat and struck the person multiple times in the head. The person, who turned out to be his 53-year-old mother, died of blunt force trauma.
Summerwill’s attorney has described the killing to local media as “a horrible accident" and said his client is devastated. The suspect had reportedly returned from Europe the night before and was experiencing jet lag, according to the Daily Herald.
