Man pulls out gun, shoots during struggle with cops at Portland airport: authorities

An armed man who fired his weapon at Portland International Airport was the only person wounded during a struggle with cops early Friday morning, authorities said.

Port of Portland police said the shooting at Oregon’s largest airport took place shortly after 5 a.m. in the baggage claim area.

It was not immediately clear what caused the altercation, but the struggle began shortly after an airport officer “contacted” the suspect, who was described only as an adult male, police said in a news release and at a news conference on Friday.

The man reportedly fired a single shot and ended up injuring himself.

Authorities said no flights were affected by the shooting. A portion of the baggage claim area was closed for the investigation, but airport operations were largely unaffected, police said.

The suspect is expected to be charged after he’s released from the hospital.
