A Long Island teen fleeing a traffic stop in a stolen SUV crashed into another vehicle, killing an elderly couple and one of his passengers, police said Sunday.
The mayhem sparked off when a Suffolk County cop spotted a grey 2015 Nissan Rogue blowing through a stop sign on Main Street in Yaphank about 11:45 p.m. Saturday.
When the cop tried to pull the car over, it sped off. The cop trailed the SUV while radioing for back up.
Five minutes into the chase, the Nissan, speeding west on Route 25, slammed into a 2009 Honday CR-V that was turning left off onto Birchwood Park Drive in Middle Island, cops said. Both vehicles were left mangled wrecks by the impact.
The driver and a passenger in the Honda, a 74-year-old man and his 71-year-old wife, died at the scene.
A 16-year-old passenger in the runaway Nissan also died at the scene, authorities said. The names of the victims were not immediately released.
The Nissan’s 17-year-old driver, Nahriek Belford, and another passenger in his Nissan were taken to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
The Nissan was reported stolen from East Patchogue on Thursday.
