The driver ran off through a nearby parking lot, leaving male passengers behind in the mangled wreckage.

One of the men, who has not yet been identified, died at the scene. The other, 53-year-old Eledao Bolaj-Garcia, of Westhampton, was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.

Investigators are still searching for the driver.

Four hours earlier and just five miles away, a teen crashed a stolen SUV during a police chase, killing an elderly couple in the other vehicle and one of his passengers. Nahriek Belford, 17, was charged with reckless endangerment, with additional charges pending.
