A heartless driver ditched his SUV after slamming into a pole on Long Island early Sunday, leaving one of his passengers to die and the other trapped in the vehicle with serious injuries, police said.
The driver was traveling east in a 2005 Nissan Murano on Middle Country Road in Coram when it swerved into the oncoming lane, skidded off the road and crashed into a metal utility pole near Homestead Drive around 4 a.m., Suffolk County cops said.
The driver ran off through a nearby parking lot, leaving male passengers behind in the mangled wreckage.
One of the men, who has not yet been identified, died at the scene. The other, 53-year-old Eledao Bolaj-Garcia, of Westhampton, was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.
Investigators are still searching for the driver.
