The LIRR rider caught on video unleashing a profane and racist rant was charged with a hate crime Wednesday and could end up behind bars for the vile tongue-lashing, officials said Wednesday.
Queens DA Richard Brown charged Edward Ruggerio, 58, with menacing as a hate crime for his verbal attack on a fellow passenger whome he threatened physical assault. Ruggerio will also face a count of second-degree aggravated harassment — crimes punishable by up to a year in jail and $1,000 fine.
"The bigotry and hatred that the defendant is accused of manifesting and acting upon have no place in a civilized society – especially in Queens County, the most culturally diverse county in the nation," Brown said in a statement.
"No one should be subjected to the vile words and intimidating actions the defendant is accused of tormenting the victim with. Crimes of hate will never be tolerated here and when they do, regrettably occur, those responsible will be brought to justice."
Ruggiero was caught on camera on April 19 exploding at Soraya Orelien, an African-American woman commuting home from class at Baruch College.
Ruggerio claims he was upset that Orelian was talking too loudly with friends.
"Shut the f--k up, you f---ing loud-mouthed monkey motherf---er," he screamed at her.
