Frances Bean Cobain is receiving large monthly inheritance from her father — the lead singer of Nirvana who committed suicide in 1994 — but she feel’s guilty because she says she “didn’t earn it.”

Cobain revealed her unusual relationship to money in a recent appearance on the “RuPaul: What’s the Tee?” podcast.

“It’s almost like this big, giant loan that I’ll never get rid of. I have an almost foreign relationship to it or guilt because it feels like money from somebody that I’ve never met, let alone haven’t earned myself,” the 26-year-old told Ru Paul and co-host Michelle Visage.

Cobain earns about $100,000 each month from her dad, People reported in 2017. She received 37% of her father’s estate in August 2010.

“I wasn’t told my dad committed suicide until the age of 5 and so my mom preemptively sent me to therapy a year before telling me so I could be eased into that conversation,” she said, admitting it was a smart decision. “You can’t really explain that to an 18-month-old.”

Since becoming sober in 2016 and divorcing Isaiah Silva, Cobain feels she’s learned how to take “real accountability” of her money.

“The one way that I was shown how to live was to … live beyond your means and live in excess. It took me stepping away from that and getting sober in order to realize that no matter how much money you think you have, it’s not permanent,” she said.

She credits her way of living to having meetings, talking about money, and “recognizing that you don't have to live lavishly in order to live well."

In the podcast, Cobain also said being compared to her father and mother, Courtney Love, doesn’t bother her.

“Kurt’s artistry was on another level,” she said. “As a fellow artist, I can recognize how important and substantial his lyrics and his melodies [were] and he was.”
