The Jets made their first significant move in what promises to be a busy offseason.
Gang Green released offensive lineman Spencer Long’s after declining to pick up his $3.47 million roster bonus that was due on Wednesday, a source told The Daily News. The team later announced the move.
Long, who signed a four-year, $27.4 million deal last year, played 13 games at center and left guard. The Jets clear up an additional $6.5 million to add to their wealth of salary cap space that is now nearly $118 million.
The Jets are interested in bringing back Long at a reduced rate, according to sources.
The veteran performed well at left guard after replacing the injured James Carpenter over the final month of the season.
Long, signed last offseason to replace ineffective center Wesley Johnson, was plagued by a nagging finger injury that affected his snaps for much of the first few months of the season.
