A doctor in western India has been arrested for performing a Cesarean delivery on a pregnant woman while allegedly hammered, said police.

The baby was declared dead soon after the operation, while the 22-year-old mother died a short while after, reported BBC.

Police claimed a Breathalyzer test confirmed the doctor was drunk. They’re investigating as to whether or not the deaths were caused by negligence or some other medical reason.

“We found that he was drunk when we arrived so we arrested him,” said Officer H.R. Goswami of Dr. P.J. Lakhani, who has been working at the government-run Sonavala Hospital for at least 15 years. He was treating patient Kamini Chachi after she had been rushed in with labor pains on Nov. 25.

Local media reported members of Chachi’s family were told the baby had died while the mother was bleeding profusely.

Her family tried sending her to a private hospital but she died on the way, they said.

Cops said Lakhani called them, asking for help as he was afraid that the family would attack him once they learned of the deaths.

“The police found that the doctor was drunk while on duty,” said Harshad Mehta, Botad Superintendent of Police. “He was first booked under the Prohibition Act and was arrested. His blood sample was sent for testing.”

The hospital has formed a committee and is expected to further investigate the cause of her death. An autopsy will be performed on the victim to determine how Chachi died.
