IKEA apologizes over using wrong ingredients in new jerk chicken, rice and peas dish at UK stores

2019-09-16

Maybe they should stick to Swedish meatballs.

IKEA recently added jerk chicken with a side of rice and peas to its menu at UK locations, but the Swedish furniture retailer seems to have missed the mark with the popular Caribbean dish.

“This is IKEA’s jerk chicken and rice and peas and no I’m not eating it” user @themlotsdad captioned a photo of a piece of chicken along with a side of rice and green peas. Unfortunately for IKEA, “rice and peas” in Caribbean cuisine typically refers to rice and beans cooked with coconut milk and topped with onions, garlic and thyme, not green peas.

The dish caused considerable head-shaking on social media.

“The chicken don’t look bad. But the literal rice and peas is killing my soul,” @CasJackson wrote.

“I was gonna say the same thing, the chicken look good but that rice n peas is tragic,” @Rachovo4L added.

“IKEA really put peas in white rice...sold it with jerk chicken and callled it rice n peas? LMAO” a third critic said.

IKEA said it was reconsidering the dish after the criticism.

“We’re aware that our new jerk chicken, served with rice and peas has created some conversation and in some cases offence,” Lorena Lourido, Country Food Manager, IKEA UK and Ireland, told Metro.co.uk. “Our intention was to create a dish for many people to enjoy but we appreciate that we may have got it wrong. We apologize and we are now re-looking at the dish.”
