House Speaker Nancy Pelosi agrees to split potential Capitol commission evenly between parties

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday that she has agreed to GOP demands that any commission investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol attack be evenly split between the two parties.

But Pelosi emphatically refused to consider widening the commission’s mandate to include other issues, like the racial justice protests that swept the country last year.

“Why would they object to (finding) the truth of what happened on Jan 6, when an insurrection descended upon the Capitol?” Pelosi told reporters. “Our purpose is to find the truth for that. It’s not about investigating one thing or another that they may want to draw into this.”

The compromise also requires a majority of the 9/11-style commission to approve any subpoenas. Pelosi said she has shared the new proposal with some GOP lawmakers.

But Republican Minority Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Caif.) said he hasn’t heard anything and insisted Congress is “still a long way away” from creating a commission.

Congressional committees have already launched investigations into the security shortcomings on Jan. 6.

But Democrats are determined to establish a commission to give an authoritative account of what happened at the Capitol, where thousands Trump supporters sought to prevent Congress from certifying President Biden’s election victory.
