Marvel Studios announced it is creating a live-action series starring a Muslim character.
Friday night at Disney’s D23 presentation, it was officially announced that a Disney+ series starring Ms. Marvel had been green-lit.
The new series will likely mark the live-action debut of Kamala Khan, a New Jersey Pakistani-American woman with incredible shape-shifting abilities.
The character first appeared in a 2013 issue of Captain Marvel. She is able to stretch some of her body parts in order to shapeshift, according to CBR.com. In the comic book, she appears to also possess the power to heal.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige had previously mentioned his intention to introduce Ms. Marvel to the Marvel Universe after first establishing Captain Marvel, played by Brie Larson on film.
English writer and comedian Bisha K. Ali is slated to act as showrunner and writer, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
An official release date was not disclosed Friday night.
